- THOSE WHO STILL SUFFER
For us, if we neglect those who are still sick, there is unremitting danger to our own lives and sanity.
I know the torment of drinking compulsively to quiet my nerves and my fears. I also know the pain of white-knuckled sobriety. Today, I do not forget the unknown person who suffers quietly, withdrawn and hiding in the desperate relief of drinking.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 151
- SEARCHING AND FEARLESS
“Searching and Fearless” is how the Fourth Step describes its inventory. It is counting- and accounting for many traits in character, both positive and negative. It is assessing the thoughts and behaviors that drive actions and have led to outcomes and consequences. The Inventory is simply an honest and thorough list of specific attitudes, people, situations, and reactions to life that have caused problems.
- STEP TWO
“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
No alcoholic acts sanely while drinking. Chronic poisoning from alcohol results in compulsive drinking and insane behavior. Willpower is not a factor in recovery until the compulsion has been removed. Dodging the truth only results in distorted thinking and opposition to help from a Power greater than ourselves.
4.SERENTIY PRAYER
God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, The courage to change the things we can, And the wisdom to know the difference.
